How to Become a Member

You excel. You serve. You lead. You succeed. You have a true thirst for challenge and accomplishment. You can become a member through a local selection process that concludes with induction into the school's National Honor Society Chapter each spring.

It is important to start preparing for membership, as early as 7th grade.All students who are scholastically eligible to apply will be expected to have at a minimum, attempted to run for an office of a club, team or sport, in or out of school. They will also need to have performed community service on more than one occasion, and this volunteering should be an ongoing action (non-paid activities). The students also need to display positive character as outlined below.

Eligibility Requirements

Students in grades 10–12 who meet the scholarship requirement of an 87% overall GPA or higher are eligible and will be invited for membership.

  • Student in Grade 10, 11, or 12.

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 87%.

This involves voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation.

Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.

The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and generally maintains a clean disciplinary record.

Students who meet the scholarship requirement will have an opportunity to complete an application detailing their accomplishments in and commitment to service, leadership, and character.

Ms. Westervelt is the faculty advisor for the Candor High School NHS Chapter, who is willing to describe the qualities and characteristics of leadership, service and character which the faculty council is seeking for consideration of membership into the NHS. She can also share the timeline for application to be completed by the students in grades 10 – 12 who meet the scholarship benchmark requirement of an 87% GPA or higher. These students will be invited to submit information about themselves to be considered for membership.
